Jenny Dolezel

Bio

Jenny Dolezel is a well recognized New Zealand Painter and Printmaker. She lives and works in Auckland and has exhibited widely both within New Zealand and internationally. Furthermore, she has gained considerable notoriety through winning many of New Zealand’s top art awards; including the Wallace Trust Paramount Award in 1996.

Since the very beginning of her career, Dolezel’s works have championed a specific brand of imagery that is wholly and unmistakably of her own invention. Her work can be easily identified by the androgynous characteristics of her figures and the theatrical manner in which they are staged. Her paintings are known for their bright and unrealistic, toy-like colouration; while her prints are renowned for their unrelenting tonal depth. In the words of Dr. Michael Dunn, her work raises “questions of identity, of gender, and of the ultimate purpose of life…”
